My wife Cheryl and I have spent over 50 combined years breeding, showing and selling llamas and suri alpacas. Here’s a chronological look into the major events that help shaped our lives and business.

2005

Rewind wins white Color Champion at west coasts largest suri alpaca show, and 2nd pl;ace at AOBA. 

Cheryl and Andy win 4 out of 5 suri llama classes at the LFA West Coast Futurity! 

2004

Andy and Cheryl raise the 2nd and 4th place True Black suri alpaca males at AOBA.

Cheryl wins the first place male, female, at the west coast's first ALSA class for suri llamas.

2003

Gift Wrap wins juvenile True Black suri female at AOBA and goes on to become the female Color Champion!

Superfine wins second class brown juvenile suri male in a class of over forty competitors.

Happy customers; Heartbreaker and Sweet 16 win five west coast shows in a row for handler Cindy Harris, showing for Craig and Daphne Aurness.

Andy is a featured speaker at AOBA and the Suri Summit East.

Yummy is the high selling female llama at the Celebrity Sale Llama sale and 5th place in the futurity.

Cheryl imports HCLA Bolivian Over Exposed from Canada, one of the last suri-type male llamas imported to the United States.

2002

Papa Zen won 2nd place at the Celebrity Sale World Futurity and The Whole Shebang won Top Ten. Bodacious and Papa Zen came back to win the ALSA Western Regional heavy wool division.

High Interest wins three firsts and a second for adult True Black suri alpaca male. Red Lightening wins three firsts and a 2nd for Rose Gray suri male. Maxed Out wins three firsts and a second for juvenile dark or fawn yearling male. Blessed by Thunder wins adult dark male at Alpacamania even though he is the only shorn suri in class. Rocky Red wins or places second or reserve champion in five shows.

2001

Andy and Cheryl host their highly successful Suri Summit Alpaca Sale in Bend, grossing $750,000. Concurrently, they hosted a Suri Summit symposium for suri alpaca breeders.

Ga Ga won juvenile Fawn suri female at AOBA and went on to win Resderve Champion Fawn female. Hot Toddy won juvenile True Black suri female.

 

2000

James Dean won 2nd place juvenile Fawn suri male at AOBA. Olivia From Bolivia won third place Fawn female in a large combined class of all fawns.

Intrigue of Bolivia wins the North West Llama Classic heavy wool female.

1999

Andy and Cheryl celebrate their 25th year raising llamas by hosting The Fall 1999 Celebrity Sale. Their Silver Anniversary Production Sale grossed $295,050.

Andy and Cheryl donate a female alpaca to the AOBA auction for the second time.

Desi's Dream wins Class 4 female llama at the Celebrity Sale World Futurity, the only shorn suri type llama in class. This is the only time all three judges unanimously chose the same animal.

1998

Showcasing their pure Bolivian llamas, Cheryl and Andy sold oth the top selling male and female llamas at the Firecracker Sale.

1997

Andy and Cheryl ship 100 alpacas to Canada, the first ever exportation of llamas or alpacas to Canada from the U.S. since in 1991.

1996

Andy and Cheryl import the first ever huacaya alpacas from Bolivia, plus the largest herd of colored suri alpacas ever imported into the United States. Cheryl spends over three months at the USDA’s Harry S. Truman Animal Import Center (HSTAIC) in Key west, Florida in quarantine with the herd. Under Dr. Cheryl’s supervision, the import has the highest survival rate of any shipment of camelids in HSTAIC history.

Andy and Cheryl initiate a Tillman tradition by donating the first ever female alpaca to the AOBA national auction. This becomes the cornerstone of funding for AOBA.

1995

Andy and Cheryl win first, second and third place suri alpaca at the National Expo-Feria in La Paz, Bolivia. They also win first place black huacaya, second place white and third place brown huacaya alpaca. They are the first North American breeder to ever win a South American national show.

Andy writes several articles for Llama Magazine including, “In the Land of the Llama,” and “Do you Know Where You Are Going?” The Tillman's llamas, Miss Bliss and Femme Fabulous also won the first and second place Woody llama at the Expo Feria.

 

1994

Tillman Llamas becomes the exclusive U.S. agent for Bolivian Suri Alpacas.

Andy and Cheryl sell Le Rage, the top-selling weanling alpaca at The 1994 Celebrity Sale.

Andy writes two articles for Llama Life. They are regarded as some of the most popular articles ever written for the magazine by his colleagues.

Andy interviews professional Bolivian wool sorter, Miguel Azucena.

Andy speaks at the Canadian Llama Association about “Llamas in the 1990s.”

Andy judges the first Montana llama futurity.

1993

Andy and Cheryl travel to Bolivia as guests of Billy Sergio and Tito Bohrt. The Borhts are the largest buyers of llama and alpaca wool in Bolivia. They exported the influential 1987/1991 Bolivian llamas and suri alpacas.

Cheryl serves on the board of Directors for the International Llama Association and represents the llama industry at the United States Animal Health Association.

 

1992

Andy visits most of the llama and alpacas breeders in Australia.

1991

Andy and Cheryl purchase Chavito, the top-selling llama of the 1991 Bolivian sale.

1990

Andy and Cheryl sell Star, the high-selling female of the year at the Spring Celebrity Sale.

1988

Andy and Cheryl marry and move to Bend, Oregon. Andy renames his business Tillman Llamas and Cheryl operates her Llamas Exclusive Veterinary Practice from the ranch.

Andy conducts four ILA-sponsored clinics entitled, “The Responsible Breeder,” which describe 130 natural physical characteristics in llama, alpaca, guanaco an vicuna. This material is still the most complete reference of llama characteristics ever assembled.

1987

Andes llamas set twelve world records when he displayed his llama herd. His herd, which includes Dusty Rose, Federico, Kismet, Justina, Periwinkle and Remedios, are among the most influential llamas of their time.

1986

Andy writes the halter-class guidelines for the American Llama Show Association, (later renamed the Alpaca and Llama Association) conducts ASLA's first judging clinic, and judges the first ALSA halter class.

1985

Andy imports llamas and alpacas from the United Kingdom. It’s also the year Andy and Cheryl first meet. Cheryl graduates Cum Lauda from Washington State University school of veterinary medicine with her doctorate in veterinary medicine and starts a two year residency in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery.

1982

Andy is re-elected president of the ILA Board of Directors; serves as program chair for the ILA’s first conference at Sunriver in Oregon, and led the first llama-owners tour in Peru.

1981

Andy co-founds the International Llama Association (ILA) with Dick and Kathy Patterson, and is elected President of the ILA Board of Directors. That same year, Andy writes the first book to ever be published about llamas entitled, Speechless Brothers.

1980

Andy is invited to study llamas and alpacas in Peru with the Agency for International Development small ruminant project at La Raya. He is the only North American llama breeder to ever be bestowed such an honor. He meets Dr. Julio Sumar and works with thousands of alpacas.

 

1979

Andy purchases his first alpacas from the Saint Louis Zoo, at a time when there were only 60 alpacas in North America.

 

1978

Andy publishes The Llama Newsletter, the nation’s first llama publication. Topics include influential research on blood chemistry normals, determining pregnancy, taxonomy, evolution, and the effects of bottle feeding.

1975

Andy begins raising llamas for a living. He helps popularize llamas as a viable alternative livestock industry.
